Supreme Court "Might" Revisit Issue of Detainees' Rights "Later"

Al Jazeera reports that two Supreme Court Justices said "they might vote..later" to revisit "the issue of whether Guantanamo detainees have a right to a civil court action to declare their indefinite detention unlawful."

Justice Breyer, speaking in favor of a right to a civil court, "wrote that upholding the detainees' legal position would have prevented an additional year or more of imprisonment."

Four votes out of the nine Justices are required to accept a case. Justices Stephen Breyer, David Souter, and Ruth Bader Ginsburg are prepared to hear the case immediately, as requested by the detainees, but they lack a fourth.

This denial came just one day after the release of a British resident who was held for over four years in a six-foot by eight-foot cell with the lights on 24 hours a day - who was not guilty! Today's press release by Amnesty International details worsening conditions at Guantanamo Bay.
