Both Houses Introduce Bills to Close Guantanamo

Both the House and the Senate have introduced legislation that would require the president to close the detention facility at Guantanamo Bay within one year from the date of passage.

H.R. 2212 and S. 1249 were introduced Tuesday and referred to the Committee on Armed Services:

(a) Closure of Detention Facility- Not later than one year after the date of the enactment of this Act--

(1) the President shall close the Department of Defense detention facility at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba; and

(2) all detainees detained at such facility shall be removed from the facility and--

Lawmakers have referred to Guantanamo as "a symbol of US failure and hypocrisy." This comes just one month after Supreme Court justices said they'd revisit the issue of detainees' rights "later," and a press release by Amnesty International that documented "worsening conditions."

At the end of the day people just want justice and a fair treatment. Personally I'm happy to be able to take time out every now and again and sip my tea in peace.

More seriously though, closure is hardly enough. A tribunal should be conducted for people who were held without charges being filed and compensation should be handed out for a terrible injustice.

One concentration camp less, that would be great. But it is even more important to stop what's going on on the US aircraft carriers in the Indian Ocean, in the CIA prisons inside "friendly nations" in eastern Europe or the Middle East, or on the island of Diego Garcia.
