Enemy of my Enemy?

Almost a month ago, the US High Command announced a new strategy that involves arming and funding Sunni insurgents in Iraq in the hopes that they'll fight against Al Qaeda. The White House and mainstream media have referred to this as "the enemy of my enemy is my friend." If they are to follow their own logic, they now must decide whether Al Qaeda or Iran is a friend:

"The leader of an al-Qaeda umbrella group in Iraq, who was thought to have beeen killed by US forces, has threatened to wage war against Iran unless it stops supporting Shias in Iraq within two months."

"Abu Omar al-Baghdadi, head of the Islamic State in Iraq, said his Sunni fighters have been preparing to wage a battle against Shia-dominated Iran." 07.09.07 | Al Jazeera

Since it is a near impossibility that the US would turn toward Al Qaeda in friendship, the logical choice (in keeping with the administration's line of reasoning) is Iran.

This is the perfect opportunity to extend a diplomatic hand toward Iran with the common goal of battling Al Qaeda in Iraq. Alternatively, it is also an opportunity for the US to encourage Al Qaeda as a weapon against Iran if it truly has Tehran in its cross-hairs; this would be a disastrous and preposterous turn of events, but with the lack of intelligent leadership in the US it would not be so unusual.
